Natural History – Portmore

U3A Natural History Group
Field Trip to RSPB Portmore Reserve 17th April 2019

It was cold and blustery when we arrived at Portmore, but the sounds of the reserve soon had us well happed up and out onto the platform to see what was there.
The Black-headed Gulls were the noisiest birds, but we soon saw and heard Lapwings displaying and Mute Swans flew past with that wonderful sound of their wings pushing through the air.
And then Bob spotted a rarity, a Marsh Harrier that has been seen on the reserve. We others did not spot it, but it had to be reported and we bathed in the reflected glory!
Over at the pond, a determined Phyllis found a Newt and we had a good look at it on Pat’s hand. It didn’t mind really. And you know how every time you start to do something in the garden, a Robin hops in to see what you’re doing? Well, see the Portmore one checking everything out
After a welcome cup of coffee, we checked out the Badgers Sett and saw many birds on our way down to the hide where displaying Great Crested Grebe were seen by all.
Thank you to Bob and Pat, Phyllis and Noreen for their good company.
