Natural History – Broughshane

U3A Natural History Group
Field Trip 7 March 2018

The group met at Houston’s Mill car park and were welcomed to Broughshane by Robert Black, one of the army of volunteers who are proud to live in The Village of the Year 2018. It was a great start to our walk.
We saw and heard many birds as we strolled along the river Braid, the birdsong was particularly welcome. Alas the Kingfisher was off doing something else and did not give us even a glimpse.
We walked through the Wetland, an area formerly known as “The Swamp” by locals, and recreated into a waterfowl reserve. Well worth a visit.

Our next port of call was Broughshane House Museum, where we had a taster of the wonderful collection of artefacts from the heritage of the Braid district. We were very fortunate to have the man himself, collector, curator, researcher and local GP, Dr Tony Redmond, to show us around and share stories about chosen items in the collection.
Leaving the Museum we adjourned to the café across the road. It was called “Scoffwell”. Enough said!
Broughshane is indeed the Village of the Year 2018, but sure we knew that already.
