Natural History – Six Mile Water

Two fish, a worm and lots of Goldcrest.

The Goldcrest is the smallest bird in Europe and we were thrilled to find not one, not two but ten of these little beauties flitting around the trees and hedges along the Six Mile Water. 30 species of birds were recorded.
The worm was being eaten by a Song Thrush, and the two fish? Well, one, a Roach, was eaten alive by a Grey Heron, the other, a Dollaghan, mercifully already dead, was being picked at by a Hooded Crow.
Check out the You Tube footage and the photos of a weird vegetable plot, a Goldcrest and the Grey Heron before it downed the Roach.
After all that drama, not to be outdone by the wildlife, we had coffee and delicious scones at the Loughside Café.
